The International Electrotechnical Commission has taken another step toward publishing a new part of the IEC 61850 series. On 4 September 2026, the IEC published Committee Draft 57/2980/CD of IEC 61850-8-3 — a new Specific Communication Service Mapping (SCSM) based on the technologies WebSocket, JSON and ASN.1. The IEC 61850 information model itself does not change: the existing services simply gain a new way of being mapped onto a modern communication stack. The commenting period for national committees ends on 30 October 2026.

The number of Ethernet switches with integrated IEC 61850-8-1 server increases. Manufacturers do not only implement standard logical node classes according to IEC 61850-7-4 but also those ones introduced by IEC 61850-90-4 technical report. These switches do also support buffered and unbuffered reporting mechanisms.
